Peter, Who Received Jesus’ Invitation from the Place of Failure

The way Jesus invites his disciples is the way of the gospel, which begins from a place of deficiency.

Peter, a seasoned fisherman on the Sea of Galilee, was in despair after spending the whole night casting empty nets.

It was at that very moment Jesus invited him.

To Peter, who stood exhausted and at his limit, Jesus came with love, saying, “Let’s begin again.”

The love of Jesus, who ended our failures and disasters through his blood of the cross on Mount Calvary, is the very gospel God has given to us.

Though Peter’s nets were empty, his heart was ready to be filled with the Word.

Even though he had an uncontrollable temperament, Peter did not argue when Jesus said, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets.”

Though it made no sense by his professional knowledge or rational judgment as a fisherman, Peter engraved Jesus’ words in his heart with faith, and the miracle began.

He caught so many fish that he could not lift the nets alone, and he called his fellow fishermen in nearby boats to share in the blessing.

The secret of such abundant grace is found in Jesus Christ.

Those who believe in God seek miracles, and the intellectuals with professions seek wisdom.

But we, who God has called, seek and preach only Christ crucified.

A stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Peter’s first response to Jesus’ miracle was repentance, realizing that he was a sinner.

When we look deeply within ourselves imprisoned in darkness, fear, and limitations, we can truly know and call upon the power of the name Christ.

Peter did not argue with Jesus despite his professional expertise and reasoning.

From the place of weariness and failure, he accepted Jesus’ invitation, and the hands that once caught fish became hands that caught people to be a disciple of Christ, spreading the light of life. Amen!

(Luke 5:1–11, 1 Corinthians 1:21–24)
